Surgery Results

Trey’s spleen was 3x’s times the normal size…so we are glad to get it out. We won’t know any of the specifics of what was in the spleen until next week We have to wait for the pathology report to be run.

Trey will likely be sore for 2-3 days and then we hope to see some relief to his tummy pain. So, we will probably know by the weekend if the removal of the spleen helped with his pain any.

We also hope to see some better hemoglobin and platelet production with the spleen being gone. As I’ve said before, we don’t think the removal of the spleen will help stop the LGL, but we do hope it helps Trey move toward the next transplant quicker and healthier. We shall see.

Emily and I both think Trey’s skin is looking better. He’s peeling terribly and it’s extremely dry, but it’s lighter. We hope his skin just gets better every day.

Please keep praying. These are important days for Trey. Thanks everyone!

Surgery Done

Doctor just came out and everything went very well. He called it a successful surgery. We will be going back soon to see Trey. In time, we will see if it helps Trey. We pray so.

Decisions…

Trey has not had a fever since June 17th and he started running one this morning. The doctors are trying to decide if they should proceed with the surgery today. Please pray for wisdom. We believe the spleen needs to come out, but don’t want to put Trey at more of a risk than he already is. We just need wisdom!

Game time

Even though the removal of the spleen is generally a relatively simple process, for Trey it’s a touch more complicated. The two big concerns for Trey are bleeding and infection. Trey’s platelets are low, but he will have received three platelet infusions over the last two days by tomorrow morning. We hope that helps with any unwanted bleeding. He is also highly immune compromised, thus leaving him more open to infection. Our doctors have done everything they can to get his body ready for this by giving certain antibiotics and other medicines, but Trey will still be immune compromised more than we want when it comes time for the surgery. We are praying he is protected by the Lord from any infection. Join us in this prayer.

The hope behind this surgery is that Trey’s tummy pain will be relieved and that with the removal of the spleen the rest of the abnormal cells we haven’t been able to get to, can be destroyed. We also hope this helps give room for good cells to grow. The removal of the spleen will not do away with the large granular lukemia (LGL), but we hope it helps Trey move to the next transplant as healthy, and as quickly as possible.

This, however, is where we rest in the Lord. We’ve done all we can, as have our doctors, and we leave the details and results in God’s hands. This is totally out of our control and Trey is in the best place possible…in the hands and arms of our mighty God. We know God is holding Trey and we know that in all things, our God is in control. I probably won’t post again until after everything is done tomorrow, which we hope will be around 1-2pm. We know you are praying with us and we are grateful. We’ve had so many texts and messages from people today letting us know they are with us…and it has been very encouraging to our heart. Keep them coming…especially Scriptures of encouragement. We need it!

We love you and are resting tonight and tomorrow in a sovereign and loving God who has ALL things in His hands…which of course includes our precious son.

Trey, we love you! You are a God’s and He is holding you. Your mom and dad will be with you every step of the way too. We are all in this together and our God has a tremendous plan for all of us in this. We love you more than you will ever know Trey, but not anywhere close to how much your Lord and Savior, Jesus, loves you! Hold on Him Trey in all things…He is the only one worth living for. I love you son!

Dad

We’re all in this together!

We are all here for Trey’s surgery tomorrow! He’s very happy. We’ve been watching funny Trey videos since we’ve been here. We love watching Trey laugh!

Jesus Suffers Alongside Us!

I am reminded this morning that Jesus suffers alongside us…He is very well acquainted with grief and suffering. In fact, as Tim Keller says,

“Jesus hates suffering, injustice, evil, and death so much, He came and experienced it to defeat it and someday, to wipe the world clean of it.”

I am reminded today that Trey’s story is not bound to this earth. The Lord has an eternal plan for Trey, one that Trey has embraced, and because Christ has overcome all things, Trey will likewise overcome as well…along with all of us who are in Christ…because of the power of the Resurrection.

As the Scripture says, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:15-16).”

I am just trying to draw near to The Lord today and rest in Him!

Splenectomy for Trey

Trey will have his spleen removed laparoscopically next Wednesday. Please pray his spleen does not grow any more before the procedure and that it can be removed without any complications.

Also, please pray this helps Trey! Emily and I have both felt for a while that this needed to happen. By removing the spleen, we think the consistent pain Trey has had in his abdominal area will be immediately relieved and the abnormal cells that we feel are trapped inside the spleen and causing problems to his platelet and other good cell development will hopefully be eliminated as well. Emily and I feel this is the best decision for Trey and can only help him. Please join us in praying the removal of his spleen will go smoothly and help him immensely!

Thank you.

Trey Update

Trey handled his treatment well yesterday. It’s only a once a week treatment, so he will get it again next week. He is getting his photopheresis treatment today and tomorrow as well.

I will say, things continue to be very complicated for Trey. With the level of abnormal cells growing and the size of Trey’s spleen enlarging, I feel we are getting to a place where we will need to make some decisions. One decision will be whether or not to take Trey’s spleen out. Our doctors feel this may be a good thing if it can be done laparoscopically. They do not want to put Trey at risk through a more invasive surgery, so if the spleen can be removed safely, I think we will move that direction as early as next week.

Another big decision will be when to move to transplant. Our doctors do not want to move to the next transplant with this much disease still in Trey’s body and skin. While we had the abnormal cells controlled in the blood, we could not control them in the skin…which is why we were forced to try something besides the Campath.

Now, we watch and see if this new drug will work. If it does not, I really have no idea what they will do next. We NEED, more than we can say, for this drug to have some very positive effect on Trey. I will admit, this is hard. It is hard for everything to be completely out of your hands, and although I know the Lord is holding Trey, I struggle to rest in that reality sometimes. God is good though and is patient with us…and HE IS IN CONTROL! We know that to be true without a doubt!

I read Psalm 20 this morning and it was very uplifting. Here are a few verses I am praying. Join me please in asking the Lord to do exceedingly, abundantly than all we could ask or imagine:

“May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you! May he grant you your heart’s desire and fulfill all your plans…may the Lord fulfill all your petitions! Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God (Psalms 20:1, 4, 5, 7).”
